The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 that represents over 108,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Finance and Business Services team located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting and Analysis, the Staff Accountant will provide accounting and financial services to support the operations of the AVMA, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), and other designated allied organizations. Those services include collecting, analyzing, reporting and reconciling financial/accounting information, as well as investigating and resolving any financial discrepancies. The position will also assist with budget preparation and administration; audit preparation; financial reporting; and reporting investment results.
To be successful in this role, you must be passionate about AVMA’s mission and highly collaborative. Additional qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in accounting is required, association experience is a plus
Demonstrated knowledge of accounting practices and principles, with thorough understanding of GAAP and applicable regulations
Strong analytical and accounting skills are required
Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and can effectively handle multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
Strong time management skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of staff, volunteer leaders, allied organizations and AVMA members
Proficient in Microsoft applications: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
General knowledge and/or experience of accounting software
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, as required

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $50,200 - $75,200. Compensation decisions consider a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs and organizational policies.
