The National Art Education Association (NAEA) is seeking a motivated and creative Publications Manager to convey the collective voice of visual arts, design, and media arts educators by overseeing the strategy and production of NAEA’s suite of publications, including peer-reviewed journals, books, an online newsletter, and additional publications and communications media.
The ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 to 7 years of managerial experience in scholarly/association publications; leading teams and cross-team collaborations; meeting deadlines; and experience working with volunteer editorial boards, authors, and external publishers. The Publications Manager oversees varying projects from concept to completion simultaneously, aligning the work to NAEA’s Strategic Vision and strategizing ways to share publications content broadly to all levels of the field. A strong design sensibility and quick adaptation to shifts in processes, technology, and platforms is key. Knowledge of visual arts and/or education fields is a plus.
General Responsibilities
Oversee the work of the Publications Team, create strategies to meet goals and refine processes, and identify opportunities for innovation and success.
Manage planning, editing, workflow, design, and production of two scholarly journals, often under tight deadlines—requiring detailed oversight and/or coordination of the work of the following: in-house copy editor, each journal’s senior editor and assistant editor, freelance copy editors and designers, and the external publisher’s staff.
Plan and manage NAEA’s book publishing, including working closely with the volunteer Professional Materials Committee, authors, and external co-publisher.
Serve as staff point person for all publications committees and editorial boards, helping to implement the editorial policies set by the NAEA Board of Directors; following established processes while tracking their viability in a continually shifting culture.
Supervise all association copyediting, often under deadline, including periodicals, books, convention program, National Art Honor Society newsletter and handbook, and general marketing and communications media.
Plan and help implement crossover strategies that broaden dissemination of NAEA resources related to and stemming from NAEA publications, leveraging this information and engagement as a member benefit or in promotion of membership.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Strategy and Communications Officer and/or Executive Director.
Work closely with the NAEA Finance Team regarding book sales, and compensation for each journal’s senior editor and editorial assistant, as well as compensation for freelance copyeditors, writers, designers, and consultants. Additionally collaborate on monitoring publishers’ contract adherence.
Qualifications
5 to 7 years of managerial experience in scholarly/association publications; team (and cross-team) leadership experience; and experience working directly with volunteer editorial boards and authors as a key contact.
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in communications, publishing, journalism, writing, or related discipline.
Excellent verbal, communication, and organizational skills. Familiarity with APA Style Manual (7th edition) preferred. Excellent eye for detail.
Proficient with MS Office Suite, Adobe applications, and comfortable with new software and systems. Design skills and/or understanding of handling design-related files is a plus.
Management experience across all stages of publications work—planning, scheduling, budgeting, workflow, writing, proofing, editing, design, production, printing, mailing, monitoring contract adherence, meeting deadlines, and hiring and supervising freelancers, contract workers, and vendors in the areas of writing, editing, design, photography, and print.
Ability to function highly in a small-team environment while managing large-scale, long- and short-term projects incorporating input from volunteer leaders.
Advanced knowledge of editorial processes, especially in regard to peer-reviewed and scholarly writing. Knowledge of peer-review systems, including Editorial Manager, is a plus.
Possess an innovative, action-oriented approach in terms of possibilities for publications content (especially bridging the gap between education theory and practice), as well as processes.
Capacity to directly manage relations with volunteer editors, authors, boards, and committees diplomatically while maintaining processes and meeting budgets and deadlines.
Adept at managing and mentoring junior staff and conducting performance evaluations.
Understanding of, and commitment to, the importance of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the role it plays in NAEA’s Mission, Strategic Vision, and communications.
