Position Description: Membership Director
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1989 as a not-for-profit association, AESP is a member-based association currently serving 2,300+ members in the United States and Canada through its main organization and 11 Regional Chapters. AESP is dedicated to improving the development, delivery, and implementation of energy efficiency, demand-side management, distributed energy resources and demand response programs. AESP does this by delivering accredited educational courses, member-driven publications, conferences and online collaboration tools as well as through the growth of its regional chapters and networking events. AESP is a family-friendly workplace with a strong emphasis on work/life balance and diversity. Relocation is not required.
SUMMARY
The Membership Director is responsible for the growth and maintenance of all AESP members and managing their overall experience and participation in the Association. This position is also responsible for working closely with each member organization to maximize their staff’s participation in the Association and optimize the overall member experience. Additionally, the Membership Director is responsible for implementing fundraising and business development activities to build capacity for the organization and its current and/or future offerings. This position will work closely with AESP’s content development team, marketing and outreach staff and the program delivery team to identify engagement opportunities that meet each organizational member’s specific needs. The Director will also lead the execution of member renewal and recruitment campaigns.
Responsibilities
Member Recruitment
Identifies new member organizations and market categories that would benefit from participation in AESP.
Works with AESP’s marketing team to develop targeted campaigns to recruit new members.
Works closely with CEO and COO to identify and qualify membership lead opportunities.
Cultivates relationships with potential partner organizations at the national, regional, state and provincial levels.
Engages with local Chapters to support joint member recruitment efforts and identify new potential Chapter opportunities.
Member Experience Management
Provides direct implementation and oversight of the Association’s member benefits. This includes developing relationships with every organizational member to customize their membership, increase their membership participation, and identify and deliver individualized value propositions for each member.
Works closely with the Content Development group of AESP to identify members as sources of content and works to secure their participation where appropriate.
Conducts regular proactive outreach to all group member organizations to ensure satisfaction.
Leads exhibitor booth and sponsorship sales process.
Provides monthly membership reports for inclusion in leadership dashboard.
Member Retention
Manages the renewals of all organizational group memberships.
Identifies at risk members based on engagement levels or other factors and develops retention strategies.
Develops customized membership packages based on organizational member needs to increase their utilization of AESP’s products and services.
Monitors and reports to leadership on industry and market trends that may impact membership.
Leads membership drives.
Strategic Leadership
Identifies new potential member services to meet to enhance member value.
Conducts member and market research, using that information to design, implement and deliver member products and services resulting in improved membership recruitment and renewal efforts on behalf of the organization.
Develops annual group membership packages.
Cultivates strong relationships with potential partners and funding organizations.
Participates in strategic planning processes for the organization.
Leads membership restructuring initiatives as needed.
Key Interactions
This position works closely with all organizational leads, the Board of Directors, the Chapter Committee Chairs, the AESP leadership team and other members of the AESP Staff.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, public relations, public policy or related field. An advanced degree in nonprofit management or business is preferred.
At least 7 years of experience in nonprofit and/or association management. Experience in membership or constituent management and/or fundraising preferred.
Specific experience in the clean energy sector is desired.

Ability to identify and qualify upselling opportunities and follow up and close the deal with members.
Proficiency with MS Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
Experience with Association Management System software (AMS).
Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail.
Creative and self-motivated with an ability to multi-task effectively and operate under pressure to meet deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a team member, and to take initiative when appropriate.
Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to travel 10-15% annually to attend AESP conferences and other member events.
Physical Demands
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

Compensation:
Salary $85,000+
Annual bonus of up to 10% based on performance
