The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Arlington, VA, a professional scientific society, is recruiting a Community Manager. The Community Manager is responsible for the development and day-to-day operation of AAPS’ online community, including both AAPS Communities and AAPS’ official social media presence on various platforms. The Community Manager is one of the most visible faces of AAPS’ brand, interacting daily with members, leaders, and other users. The Community Manager’s primary responsibility is volunteer management, specifically supporting volunteers in leading their online communities on the AAPS Communities platform. In this capacity, the Community Manager helps volunteers and member participants understand the technology and learn about best practices in community management. The Community Manager is also responsible for AAPS’ social media presence, including building relationships with members who are active in social media and sharing AAPS’ content.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop custom content and audience development and engagement plans for AAPS’ online community;
Develop AAPS’ community strategy in light of the organization’s strategic plan and community-development priorities;
Implement and lead audience engagement for AAPS’ online community and social media accounts;
Provide community technical support and customer service for volunteer leaders, members, and users;
Monitor the health and behavior of the online community and AAPS’ social media day-to-day;
Identify opportunities for new programming as well as threats to the community’s well-being and AAPS’ brand;
Recommend and implement tactics within the AAPS communities to support membership and community development;
Recommend and develop engagement within the AAPS communities to support programs and products, and coordinate this engagement with other marketing and communication plans;
Respond appropriately to contacts made with AAPS through its social media presence;
Recognize positive and scientific-focused messaging on social media that is made by AAPS members and partners;
Collect, analyze, and share data about AAPS’ communities with relevant stakeholders;
Train and assist volunteer leaders, members, and staff in using the communities, AAPS app, and social media through presentations and online resources;
Liaison with AAPS’ community consultant for best practices and to troubleshoot technical problems; and
Provide guidance to AAPS community volunteers on AAPS policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Proven customer service excellence.
Strong knowledge of online analytics and data reporting.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and project management skills.
Proven ability to multitask.
Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills.
Ability to represent the association effectively in a variety of settings and diverse communities (AAPS leadership, members, public, and volunteers).
Education and/or Experience
BA degree in Communications or similar field.
Must have three to five years of experience in association management, communications, or similar field.
Must have experience with online community management, Higher Logic platform experience preferred.
Experience with volunteer management.
Experience and understanding of social media platforms.
Experience with iMIS or other similar association management systems.
Understanding or interest in pharmaceutical sciences or related disciplines.
Physical Demands
Majority of work is performed on a personal computer sitting at a desk for long periods of time throughout the day. May be expected to lift boxes up to 10 pounds. Travel to AAPS PharmSci 360 conference is required. Evening and weekend work required, particularly during the height of the conference. Standing for long periods of time and walking at meetings is required. Ability to remain professional in stressful situations.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a fast-paced, high volume, detail-oriented office environment. The work environment is a moderately open one, with a combination of cubicles and offices. The noise level will vary from quiet to loud.
