Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, the Deputy Executive Director, Knowledge Development and Internationalization provides executive oversight and manages NAFSA staff’s contribution to thought leadership in the field of international education. This role provides executive oversight to academic and conference programming and internationalization services.
Major Functions and Responsibilities:
Provides Executive Leadership for thought leadership in international education
Provides intellectual leadership to NAFSA staff work, provides program content guidance across Annual Conference and other events during the year. Actively engages in academic outreach and dissemination of ideas relevant to international education.
Provides executive leadership to Academic Affairs, Conference Program, and Internationalization units.
Supports NAFSA Strategic Plan, especially furthering comprehensive internationalization, identifying critical trends and issues in the field, and creating and disseminating knowledge.
Supports the CEO in academic activities pursuant to NAFSA’s mission, including, but not limited to, contributions to books, journals, and other written publications.
Guides NAFSA staff contributions to thought leadership
Oversees NAFSA contribution to Journal of International Education, managing balance between:
Curating and synthesizing ideas generated by external contributors
Convening events at which others discuss topics set by NAFSA and
Generating new ideas ourselves
Work closely and maintain collaborative, effective relationships with member knowledge communities
Work closely and well with Board VP for Scholarship & Institutional Strategy on outreach to faculty in academic institutions.
Facilitates effective collaborations with other parts of NAFSA staff, especially with Leadership & Professional Development Services on how findings from new knowledge generation and research shape professional training and how practical needs shape research agendas
Provide executive leadership for cultivating external relations to maintain support and collaboration for academic programs and internationalization activities
Manage re-vamped NAFSA Fellows Program
Conceive of and organize conferences led by NAFSA or in cooperation with other entities to help disseminate knowledge
Develop relationships with faculty and administrators in the higher education community to advance international education
Oversee relationships with other international education associations in the U.S. and internationally
Be familiar with trends in academic research on international education
Provide intellectual guidance to Publications while working with other NAFSA departments
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Required Skills and Experience:
PhD in a related field preferred, but not required
Strong organizational skills
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated academic entrepreneurship through creation or management of complex programs
Experience managing and monitoring program budgets and expenses
Familiarity and support for international education; knowledge and experience with international education issues strongly preferred
