The Manager, Guidelines and Assessments is responsible for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, health technology assessments, and other clinical statements. These documents fulfill the responsibility of the American Academy of Ophthalmology to be the recognized leader in providing clinical practice guidance for quality patient care.
Research, write, edit, publish, and disseminate clinical practice guidelines and health technology assessments, working with panels of volunteer ophthalmologists.
Responsible for 21 clinical practice guidelines. In a typical year, 3-5 titles are being revised for publication in the current year, and 3-5 for publication in the following year.
Responsible for three 2-day meetings over the year, and 1 symposium at the annual meeting to plan and staff.
Responsible for technology assessments (average word length of each=8,000). In a typical year, 10-15 titles are in progress for publication in the current or following year.
Responsible for 53 clinical statements which are updated every 5 years. In a typical year, 5 titles are in progress for publication in the current or following year.
Ensure the guideline and technology assessment procedures and panel composition meet requirements for the Council of Medical Specialty Societies Code for Interactions with Companies.
Responsible for division and department meetings, direct report meetings and employee management duties.
Ensure compliance with overall organizational goals when developing and finalizing documents for publication.
Work independently and exercise judgment in planning and accomplishing goals.
Stay abreast of health policy trends and legislation regarding quality of health care, clinical practice guidelines, and technology assessment.
Coach and provide performance evaluation of 3 direct reports.
Develop enhancements to existing processes to make production more efficient and aligned with nationally recognized standards.
Have experience with developing guidelines and/or technology assessments and with communicating clearly about clinical issues and methodological issues with physicians and methodologists
Demonstrated strong understanding of evidence-based clinical practice guideline development principles, literature, current state of practice, and experts in the field
Have a familiarity with statistics, study methodology, and critical evaluation of medical literature
Have strong writing and editing skills, communicating with clinical audiences
Have knowledge of health policy trends and legislation regarding quality of health care, clinical practice guidelines, technology assessment, and conflict of interest issues
Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate clinical data and scientific evidence
Must be familiar with systematic reviews and - online database searches, e.g., National Library of Medicine-PubMed, Cochrane Library
Have experience creating evidence tables and evaluating clinical trial parameters, results, and statistical methods
Demonstrated leadership in managing and directing the work of direct reports and physician volunteers
Be influential and effective in both written and verbal communication skills to solicit input, to educate, and to gain consensus
Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, complete tasks efficiently and on deadline, sometimes with little lead time
Have a college degree, in biology, statistics or public health
Clinical, patient care experience (e.g., RN) preferred
